OUR SACRED DUTY AS PARENTS IS TO FEEL WHOLE SO THAT OUR CHILDREN HAVE THE EXAMPLE OF OUR OWN SELF - WORTH.

As a mother and yoga teacher to children, I realize more and more what it means to be a parent and a teacher. It means to be both a student and teacher at all times. First a student. It is to show up and be willing to learn about others and about ourselves. It is to be in balance, to feel whole, to be keenly aware of ourselves and our surroundings in each and every moment. It is to be fully present in our lives.
Genuine, authentic and effective teaching and parenting is the capacity to share knowledge and wisdom in concert with the capacity to attune to (to tune into others feelings, to hear, see and feel on an emotional level) another human being. It is especially important to be able to do this when parenting and teaching children.
Children are always trying to attune to adults for self - regulation. Their ability to downshift strong physiological and emotional states is incomplete by design. They depend on us and our stable nervous system for help. We are able to complete this circuit through our tone of voice, sensitivity to the child's nervous system, eye contact, intent to connect and a steady, calm presence.
This is why we must be the student first and adopt self - care practices that stimulate our sympathetic nervous system (relaxation response). Children do not want to connect with stressed out, anxiety ridden, reactive energy. Children do not feel safe amidst such chaotic energy. We must serve as a steady rock for our children. We must aim to be their true North Star. They must see us leading by example so they too will know how to achieve balance in their own lives on their own one day. Let's allow them to have an example of our own self - worth, so they too will find their own. Until then, it is our embodied presence that our kids are anchoring to.
